The first Montessori Nursery School in Montenegro, as an educational facility, for children of preschool age, was founded on 10th January 2013 by an act of establishment, and began operating on 28th January 2013 in Niksic, in Vuk Karadzic street.
The school which operated according to a specialised Montessori programme, bears the name of "Zvono" (Bell) and was founded by the Cano Koprivica Non-Governmental Foundation.
Recognising the significance of sound upbringing and education, and in line with its strategic aims which are visible in activities which encourage the development of education and culture, the Cano Koprivica Foundation launched the "Zvono" Montessori Nursery School, which works with children from 3 to 6 years of age according to Adapted Montessori Programme which supports the humanist concept of preschool education and upbringing, which is in line with the democratic principles of Montenegro and is a response to the reform processes in education.
After signing an agreement with the Montessori Association of Serbia, which is a member of the Association Montessori Internationale, the Cano Koprivica Foundation certified four Montessori teachers and moved into premises 420m2 in size, containing 3 playrooms, 2 sleeping rooms, 2 dining rooms in which food is prepared, a sports hall and administrative space, and obtained all the necessary Montessori didactic material for work, and thus created adequate staff and environment for the functioning and work of the Zvono Montessori Nursery School. This institution, the first of its type in Montenegro, works according to the standards of the Association Montessori Internationale, and respects all the requirements of the Mandatory Plan and Programme which the Bureau for Schooling in Montenegro prescribes, all with the aim of securing high quality preschool education and upbringing of children.
The Montessori programme requires the creation of an adequate educational environment in which children gain experience according to their own programme and transfer this into knowledge. The Montessori concept of preschool education and upbringing enables conditions for the development of all the child's potential, his/her growing up and fulfilment of his/her needs, which offers the preschool child the opportunity to follow his/her own personal development, to develop abilities and to form his/her interaction with the environment.
The Montessori concept is present in the countries of Europe and the world, and is named after Maria Montessori who is today counted among the most significant reform educationalists. This concept is seen in the fact that preschool children are enabled to follow their own personal development, to develop abilities and form his/her interaction with the environment. Today no one school can prepare a child entirely the work he/she will do after the end of schooling. What knowledge once was, knowledge as a valued possession, is today the ability to react to change and adapting to changes. The Montessori programme emphasises particularly the significance of self-activity and an individual tempo of development.
A large number of respected Niksic residents, friends of the Foundation, parents whose children were in the first group of enrolled pupils at the school, as well as Mr. Nikola Koprivica, the founder of the Cano Koprivica Foundation, attended the opening of the Zvono Montessori Nursery School.
The official opening was accompanied by cocktails and a musical interlude.
